The SAS hero has become a staple for popular fiction in the last few years, but Colin Dunne has a different take on the genre in Red Alert. His main character is a soldier turned detective, and he has to use his brain as much as his muscle to crack down the mystery at the heart of the story. There are some neat twists, and some memorable, oddball characters, including a whore with a heart of gold unlike any you have seen before. There is less realism than you get from most other military writers and less out and out violence, but the writing is far better and the whole story is pacy. Red Alert is good, mindless fun.
